Chris Murphy Blasts Trump Admin’s War With Iran

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) sharply criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the war with Iran during an appearance Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” warning that expanding the conflict could lead to a costly and prolonged military disaster.

Speaking with Jake Tapper, Murphy reacted to reports that the administration is considering sending U.S. special forces into Iran to seize enriched uranium. The senator said such a move would significantly escalate the conflict and could lead to new American casualties.

“This is already a war that is becoming an ongoing disaster,” Murphy said, arguing that inserting ground troops would put dozens or even hundreds of U.S. service members at risk.

Murphy also questioned the administration’s overall strategy, saying its objectives appear to shift frequently between eliminating Iran’s nuclear program and pursuing regime change. Even if the U.S. were able to seize nuclear material or damage facilities, he argued, Iran would still retain the scientific knowledge needed to rebuild its nuclear capabilities.

“You can’t bomb knowledge out of existence,” Murphy stated, adding that military action alone cannot permanently prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Murphy: ‘The American People Don’t Want This War’

Tapper pressed Murphy on whether he supported military strikes that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and targeted missile and nuclear facilities. Murphy said he opposes the regime but warned that military campaigns aimed at removing leadership in the Middle East have historically produced greater instability.

He argued that even if Iran’s current leadership is removed, the likely outcome would be another hard-line government that continues confrontations with the U.S. and its allies.

Murphy instead pointed to diplomacy as the most effective way to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. He cited the nuclear agreement negotiated during the Obama administration, which he said placed limits on Iran’s nuclear program and allowed extensive international inspections before it was abandoned by President Donald Trump in his first term.

According to Murphy, the collapse of that agreement contributed to the current crisis.

The senator also reiterated his opposition to a potential request from the administration for an additional $50 billion in funding for the war effort. Murphy said he would oppose such funding, stating that the American public does not support another long-term conflict in the Middle East.

“If you support the troops, then you should be voting against funding this war,” he said, warning that the U.S. risks repeating the costly experiences of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Murphy Calls Out Trump Administration’s Incompetence In War With Iran

The interview also addressed reports that the U.S. may be responsible for an airstrike on a girls’ elementary school in Iran, with Iranian officials claiming large numbers of children and teachers were killed.

While acknowledging that mistakes can occur during wartime, Murphy said the incident would raise serious concerns if confirmed, particularly because it occurred on the first day of the conflict.

“The fact that this mistake was made on the first day of war speaks to the incompetence of our leadership at the Department of Defense,” he stated.

Murphy added that strikes against civilian infrastructure, including a reported attack on a desalination plant, could fuel greater hostility toward the U.S. and strengthen hostile militant groups across the region.
