Rep. McGovern Lambasts Trump, Republicans Over War With Iran

Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA) sharply criticized President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans on the House floor last week over the administration’s decision to launch military operations against Iran, calling the conflict illegal and warning it could repeat the mistakes of the Iraq War.

McGovern said there is widespread agreement in Washington that Iran’s government has long been a destabilizing force in the region, but argued that reality does not justify the decision to begin a new war in the Middle East.

“Nobody is defending the Ayatollah,” McGovern said. “There is no love lost for a brutal government that sponsors terror.”

The Massachusetts Democrat questioned why Trump had campaigned on promises to avoid new Middle East conflicts only to end up ordering military action against Iran.

Trump repeatedly pledged during the 2024 campaign that he would not send American troops into new wars in the region, McGovern pointed out, yet that promise was broken when the administration launched combat operations.

Trump, Republicans Struggle To Justify War With Iran

McGovern also called out Republicans for shifting their public justification for the war, saying the administration and its allies had cited several different explanations in a short period of time, including an imminent threat, concerns about Iran’s nuclear program, and the possibility of regime change.

“In the last 24 hours alone the rationale has shifted again and again,” McGovern said.

The congressman said he attended a classified briefing about the conflict and came away unconvinced that Iran posed an immediate threat to the United States.

“There was no imminent threat,” he said, arguing the situation reminded him of the claims about weapons of mass destruction used to justify the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

McGovern said the war lacked legal justification because Congress had not authorized it and the United Nations Security Council had not approved military action.

He also criticized the financial cost of the conflict, saying the United States is spending billions of dollars each day on the war effort while lawmakers remain divided over domestic priorities such as expanding access to healthcare.

McGovern further argued that the burden of the conflict would fall largely on ordinary Americans serving in the military rather than political leaders or wealthy elites.

“It’s not Donald Trump’s kids who will have to go fight and die for their draft‑dodging dad. It’s not the children of the billionaire Epstein class. It’s working‑class kids who are going to put their lives on the line,” he stated.

“Shame on you all!” McGovern called out to his Republican colleagues. “You’re all just a bunch of pathetic neocon warmongers!”
