Alabama Republicans Pass Law To Protect IVF Treatments

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed a bill yesterday which will protect IVF, or ‘ in vitro fertilization treatment in the State of Alabama following a ruling from the State Supreme Court which resulted in several IVF facilities temporarily closing their doors.

The bill provides civil and criminal immunity for destruction or damage to embryos that may occur during the IVF process.

We reported on that ruling at the time,

The ruling, which favored the plaintiffs, centered around an Alabama law called the ‘Wrongful Death of a Minor Act.’ This law protects unborn children, as well as children who have been born, which the Alabama high court stated multiple times in their ruling.

The controversial decision states, “the relevant statutory text is clear: the Wrongful Death of a Minor Act applies on its face to all unborn children, without limitation.”

Former President Donald Trump, who is now the lone candidate in Republican Presidential Primary, and will be the GOP nominee for President in 2024, called on the Alabama legislature to protect IVF treatments just after the ruling was announced.

Trump said about the ruling in Truth Social post after it was handed down,

We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IF in every State in America. Like the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans, including the VAST MAJORITY of Republicans, Conservatives, Christians, and Pro-Life Americans, I strongly support the availability of IF for couples who are trying to have a precious baby. Today, I am calling on the Alabama Legislature to act quickly to find an immediate solution to preserve the availability of IVF in Alabama. The Republican Party should always be on the side of the Miracle of Life – and the side of Mothers, Fathers, and their Beautiful Babies. IF is an important part of that, and our Great Republican Party will always be with you, in your quest, for the ULTIMATE JOY IN LIFE!

FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP ON Alabama IVF ruling

President Joe Biden reportedly plans to use his platform at The State of the Union tonight to highlight the IVF fight, as First Lady Jill Biden has invited an Alabama IVF patient to the SOTU as one of her guests.

IVF treatments have officially been protected in Alabama. Treatments are reportedly set to resume this week.
