Apple Cancels Electric Car Project, Ending Years Of Work
Apple Inc, best known for their iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers, has announced that they are halting research and development on one of their most anticipated projects, the Apple Electric car.
The company, worth an estimated $2.82 Billion is set to start fazing out the team that has been working on the project for the last decade. Apple hoped to bring a product to the market to rival the Tesla electric vehicle lines, which have become the most popular fully electric vehicles in the United States.
Apple reportedly had over 2,000 employees working on the project, who may have to find other work in the coming weeks. The announcement to end the research and development on the Apple electric vehicle was made by Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch, a vice president in charge of the effort.
Apple will be allegedly repurposing employees from the electric car division and placing most of them in their growing artificial intelligence department. While Apple has seen some success from their new ‘Apple Vision Pro,’ Apple’s first step into augmented reality, the release of that product has been mired in negative reviews and internet memes, especially surrounding the hefty $3500 price tag.
The ‘Vision Pro’ failed to sell out in many locations, even having hundreds of customers returning the item within days of their purchase. Could the success, or lack thereof, of the Apple Vision Pro be part of this decision from the $2.8 Trillion company?
The vehicle was reportedly going to start at a whopping $100,000, marking it clear out of the price range of a majority of Americans. Apple’s trend over the last several years has been towards extremely expensive products that most Americans simply cannot afford, a far cry from the company that created the Macintosh 2.0, a cheap, easy-to-use machine that was affordable to the average Americans.
Apple has changed quite a bit. Some blame Steve Jobs’ passing, and others simply blame time. Either way, it’s safe to say that nobody is going to be driving an ‘Apple Car,’ anytime soon.
