Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter and Tesla, sued OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman this week after accusing Altman of prioritizing the companies profits and commercial interests over the original goal of “benefiting humanity.”

OpenAI was created in 2015 with the help of both Altman and Musk in partnership with Microsoft, but now the two disagree on the direction of the once-shared company.

Elon Musk has been discussing the risks of introducing human biases into artificial intelligence, which he believes should remain impartial and unbiased. Elon Musk stated that his initial motivation for getting involved with OpenAI was the company’s mission to operate as a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing artificial intelligence for the “benefit of humanity.”

Since Musk’s departure from OpenAI in 2018, the company has transitioned to a for-profit business model that allows it to control access to its technology worldwide. In this lawsuit, Musk is requesting that OpenAI be mandated to share its technology with others and that he be reimbursed the money he had provided to the organization.

OpenAI was recently involved in another lawsuit with The New York Times and other digital outlets because the company’s chatbot was scraping copyrighted material to train its AI.

According to the lawsuit, the nonprofit status of the company was a source of problems. While Musk wished to continue with the company as a research lab, Altman insisted they switch to a for-profit business model.

“Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Mr. Musk said at one point, according to the complaint. “I will no longer fund OpenAI until you have made a firm commitment to stay, or I’m just being a fool who is essentially providing free funding to a startup. Discussions are over.”

The lawsuit is attempting to prove that the company would not have happened if it weren’t for Musk’s contributions, including $44 million in funding, as well as the company’s initial office space in San Francisco, including the monthly expenses. In addition to funding the company, Musk was also responsible for recruiting OpenAI’s chief scientist, Mr. Sutskever.
