Former World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals Manager Dead At 92

Whitey Herzog, the former St. Louis Cardinals manager who led the team to a World Series victory in 1982, passed away this week at the age of 92.

The Cardinals organization and Whitey’s family released a statement following Herzog’s passing.

“The entire Cardinals family is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer and World Series champion manager Whitey Herzog,” 

“Whitey spent his last few days surrounded by his family,” the family said in a statement issued by the Cardinals. “We have so appreciated all of the prayers and support from friends who knew he was very ill. 

“Although it is hard for us to say goodbye, his peaceful passing was a blessing for him.”

Throughout his managerial career, Herzog compiled a 1,281-1,125 record over eighteen seasons, winning three National League pennants and a World Series.

As well as being a revered manager, Herzog’s playing career began when the New York Yankees signed him, and he remained in the minor leagues. Throughout his career, he played for the Washington Senators, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers.

In 634 total games, Herzog batted .257 with 25 home runs, 172 RBIs, 213 runs scored, 60 doubles, 20 triples, and 13stolen bases. While he had a great career as a player, Herzog would achieve incredible success as a manager.

Herzog’s first job as a manager was with the Texas Rangers, where he led the team to a 47-91 record but was later fired.Herzog landed his next job with the Kansas City Royals, where he would stay for the next five seasons, finishing with a 410-304 record. During that time, the Royals won three consecutive American League West titles.

Following his success in Texas, Herzog was hired as the manager for the Cardinals, where he stayed until 1990, winning the World Series in 1982. With the Cardinals, Herzog compiled an 822-728 record.

In the last few years of his coaching career, Whitey served as the general manager for the Angels in 1992 and 1993. After 1993, Herzog retired from Major League Baseball and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
