Violent crime in New York City subways has escalated to the point where Governor Cathy Hochul has deployed a thousand National Guardsmen, state police, and MTA police to patrol them.

This is not the first attempt to solve the problem, as a thousand NYPD officers were ordered to patrol the subways just last month in an effort to curb the surge in crime. NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper stated that arrests in the subways are up 45% this year.

Hochul made a statement during a news conference this week.

“For people who are thinking about bringing a gun or knife on the subway, at least this creates a deterrent effect. They might be thinking, ‘You know what, it just may just not be worth it because I listened to the mayor and I listened to the governor and they have a lot more people who are going to be checking my bags,”

The 750 National Guardsmen and 250 state troopers will be assigned to check bags at subway entrances. Hochul hopesthat these measures will enhance the safety of citizens using the subway.

Hochul has proposed other measures to help decrease the crime rate in the subway, such as suggesting that individualsconvicted of assaulting subway passengers be banned from the service for three years.

The Governor is also asking district attorneys to coordinate with her efforts in an attempt to keep repeat offenders out of the subway. NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper also voiced his concern that once offenders had been arrested, they were released days later.

“Why are we arresting people 100 times and once we make those arrests, why are they out within a day or two, sometimes,”

In just the first two months of 2024, New York City saw a nearly 20% increase in subway crime, prompting local leaders to take action.
