House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Thursday called out Republicans for mismanaging taxpayer dollars, stating that federal spending under President Donald Trump has prioritized wealthy donors and military conflict over lowering costs for everyday Americans.
Speaking at a press conference, Jeffries framed the debate over federal policy as fundamentally about how public money is managed. He said elected officials are entrusted with determining how taxpayer dollars are spent and argued that those resources should be directed toward making life more affordable for working families.
According to Jeffries, Democrats remain focused on reducing the cost of living, repairing what he described as a broken healthcare system, and ensuring that Americans who work hard can achieve economic stability rather than merely surviving paycheck-to -paycheck.
Jeffries contended that Republicans have taken a different approach, accusing them of using public funds to support large tax breaks for wealthy donors. Jeffries pointed to Trump and Republicans’ trademark “One Big Beautifil Bill,” which he aptly referred to as the “One Big Ugly Bill,” as an example of misplaced priorities.
He also criticized funding decisions related to immigration enforcement, calling out his Republican colleagues for handing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) a $75 billion “slush fund” that he said would expand the unwelcome presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in communities across the country. Jeffries argued the funding would lead to aggressive enforcement actions targeting immigrant families.
Jeffries Says ‘Democrats Are Committed’ To Make Life Better For The American People
Beyond domestic spending, Jeffries also condemned the administration’s military actions involving Iran. He noted that billions of taxpayer dollars are being spent on military operations in the Middle East while Americans back at home continue to face high costs for healthcare, housing, and groceries.
Jeffries additionally pointed to Trump’s tariffs for increasing prices for consumers, stating that trade policies have added thousands of dollars in costs for American households.
Democrats, he said, intend to center their political agenda on safeguarding public resources and directing them toward policies that improve the daily lives of ordinary Americans.
“Democrats are committed,” Jeffries stated, “to making sure that we jealously guard the resources of the American people and we use it to make life better for everyday Americans, not actually make things worse, which is what Donald Trump and the Republicans have done.”
