Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal today called on Obama-appointed Justice Sonia Sotomayor to retire from the Supreme Court. Sotomayor, the first Hispanic-America woman to be named to the Court, was appointed to her position in 2009.
NBC News covered a growing concern within Democrat circles that Sotomayor, who is just 69 years old, and will be 70 in June, could pass away while sitting on the Supreme Court. Democrats are reportedly comparing the situation to that of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died while serving on the Supreme Court.
The Democratic Party allegedly views Ginsburg’s decision to remain on the Court in 2014 despite calls from her Party to retire, ultimately led to Donald Trump being able to nominate three Supreme Court Justices who were eventually confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
Ginsburg was replaced by Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Sotomayor is the third oldest Justice on the Court. The oldest is Justice Clarence Thomas at 75. The second oldest is Justice Samuel Alito at 73.
Chief Justice Roberts is the same age as Sotomayor, 69, and Justice Kagan is the next oldest at 63. By all accounts, recent attacks on Sotomayor’s age seem to be manufactured for purely political reasons. Unforntunately for those seeking to inject politics into the Judiciary, the Supreme Court is apolitical.
Justices are not members of any political Party. They are intended to be independent-minded Justices who show no favor to any political group. To show political favoritism within their decisions, or official capacity as a Justice, would be against the very fundamental nature of the Judicial branch of governement.
This small fact has not stopped Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal for calling on Sotomayor to resign from the Supreme Court, allowing the Chuck Schumer Senate and Biden White House to confirm a Justice in her place.
The Senator used a tactic of pure intimidation when speaking about Sotomayor in a clip aired on MSNBC. In that bombshell soundbite, the Senator says,
You know, we should learn a lesson. You know, it’s not like there’s any mystery here about what the lesson should be. The old saying, you know, graveyards are full of indispensable people, ourselves in this body included.
