Grammy-winning musician Casey Benjamin, best known for collaborating with stars like Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar, passed away this week at the age of 45. The cause of death has not been confirmed.
In his career, Casey won two Grammy Awards and worked in many different genres of music, including jazz, hip-hop,and R&B. Some of the big-name stars Casey worked alongside include Roy Hargrove, Betty Carter, Derrick Hodge, Busta Rhymes, Diddy, Beyoncé, John Legend, DJ Logic, Mary J. Blige, and Kanye West.
Casey also worked alongside other stars as the keyboardist/saxophonist for Patrick Stump’s live solo project tour.
Benjamin was born in South Jamaica, Queens, New York. Benjamin began playing the saxophone at the age of eight and later attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Casey also attended The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he met Robert Glasper.
Benjamin was also one half of the funk pop new wave duo “HEAVy” with vocalist Nicky Guiland.
Benjamin’s former bass player, Derrick Hodge, also released a statement following the star’s death.
“Tonight, I honor a brother … Casey Benjamin, thank you for inspiring me, for being a light in my life, and for your unbelievable influence on the music world. I will carry your smile with me, brother,” Hodges wrote. “And we will collectively honor and carry your legacy with us.”
“Can’t get my words together at this moment but will echo a few of my last words to you: I’m thankful for you and love you always!” he added. “Rest well, King.”

The musician’s family released a statement following Benjamin’s passing.
“It is with the deepest sorrow that the Benjamin family shares the heartbreaking news of the passing of Casey Benjamin. Casey was recovering from a recent surgery, and we are still gathering all the facts. We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support from family, friends, and Casey’s esteemed music community. Casey stayed true to the art of his music, and the energy of his spirit will live on in eternity.”
