Former Albany defensive lineman AJ Simon, who was hoping to be selected in this year’s National Football League draft, passed away this week at the age of 25. No cause of death has been released.
The Albany football program released a statement following the tragic passing of one of their former players.
“The UAlbany football program was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral ‘AJ’ Simon this morning,”
“AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany. He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years.”

Heading into this year’s NFL draft, Simon was ranked as the 448th prospect. He was hoping to change his life forever byliving his dream of playing in the National Football League.
Simon began his collegiate career at Bloomsburg University before transferring to the University of Albany. At Albany, he was named a 2023 All-CAA first-team defensive selection, a Phil Steele All-CAA first-team selection, and an FCS Football Central First Team All-American honoree.
Simon excelled not only on the field but also in the classroom. He was named as part of the 2023 Fall CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. Simon was also recognized with honors.
In just his senior season with Albany, AJ racked up fifty-five tackles and twelve and a half sacks. As well as his personal accomplishments, the Great Danes achieved an 11-4 record on their way to their first-ever Coastal Athletic Association title before reaching the semifinals of the 2023 FCS playoffs.
Albany head coach Greg Gattuso released a statement following Simon’s tragic passing.

“My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.”
