Popular actor Ian Gelder, best known for his role on the hit television series Game of Thrones, passed away this week, just months after being diagnosed with bile duct cancer at the age of 74.
The news of Gelder’s passing was confirmed by his husband, Ben Daniels, on Instagram.
“It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,”
“Ian was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December and yesterday he passed at 13.07. I’d stopped all work to be his carer but neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast.”
“I honestly don’t know what I’ll do without him by my side. He coped with his dreadful illness with such bravery, with no self pity. Ever. He was remarkable and will be so missed,”

Gelder appeared in a total of twelve episodes of Game of Thrones, as well as having many other notable credits throughout his career, such as “Doctor Who,” “Fifteen-Love,” and “His Dark Materials.”
Gelder made his professional debut on British television in the 1970s, when he made appearances on shows, such as “New Scotland Yard,” “Play for Today,” and “Rumpole of the Bailey.” after various small roles, Ian received his breakthrough role in 2009, where secured the role of Mr. Decker in five episodes of the Doctor Who spinoff “Torchwood: Children of Earth,” and later returned to the “Doctor Who” universe in a 2020 episode of “Doctor Who.”
Ian was also set to appear in the upcoming season of “Interview With The Vampire,” which is set to premiere on May 12th, as well as in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season 2, which is premiering later this year.
