Sen. Gallego Rails Against Trump’s War With Iran After Death Of US Troops

Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) delivered a blunt rebuke of President Donald Trump’s escalating war with Iran, stating that American service members are paying the price for what he called an illegal and ill-conceived conflict.

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union with Dana Bash, Gallego reacted to news that three U.S. troops had been killed, describing the losses as unnecessary and a result of a leadership that fails to understand the consequences of war. A Marine Corps veteran of the Iraq War, Gallego said he knows firsthand what it means to see friends die in combat—and what it feels like for families waiting at home. He recounted how his own mother once endured days not knowing whether he was alive.

“That’s the fear,” he said, warning that thousands of American families are now reliving it—without a clear explanation from the president about why U.S. forces are in harm’s way.

Gallego dismissed administration claims of an imminent Iranian missile threat to the American homeland, calling them excuses unsupported by known capabilities. He pointed out that there was no evidence Iran could strike the U.S. mainland and argued that the president has failed to hold a substantive press conference to justify the war. Instead, he called out Trump for offering brief, one-way remarks on the matter before heading off to a fundraising event at Mar-a-Lago.

While acknowledging that Iran’s supreme leader was a brutal figure, Gallego questioned what comes next. Regime change, he argued, cannot be reduced to eliminating one leader. Without a defined political strategy or diplomatic pathway, he warned that hard-liners could consolidate power, leaving the region more unstable than before.

“What is the plan?” Gallego repeatedly asked. “Hope is not a strategy.”

He also raised broader concerns about strategic distraction, noting that prolonged engagement in the Middle East diverts resources and attention from long-term competition with China. Sustained operations, he said, risk depleting critical munitions and defensive systems such as Patriot batteries without a clearly articulated end state.

Gallego Calls On Colleagues To Reconvene And Hold War Powers Vote

Gallego rejected the idea that hostile rhetoric alone justifies war and argued that countering terrorism and regional threats can be accomplished through targeted operations rather than full-scale regime change. He emphasized that war should be undertaken only when it clearly serves the national interest and when leadership can define what victory looks like.

On domestic security, Gallego said Americans should remain vigilant but expressed confidence in homeland defense capabilities, noting that federal agencies have substantial resources. The greater risk, he suggested, comes from initiating conflicts without defined objectives.

The Arizona senator is calling for the Senate to immediately reconvene and vote on a War Powers Resolution to block continued hostilities absent congressional authorization. For Gallego, the issue is both constitutional and moral.

“This was a BS reason for us to go to war,” he stated, pointing out that the president campaigned on avoiding new conflicts but has instead launched one without demonstrating necessity or articulating an exit plan.

In Gallego’s view, leadership requires more than force—it requires clarity, accountability, and a strategy that puts American lives and national interests first.
