‘State Of Delusion’: Schumer Lambasts Trump Over SOTU Address

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) delivered a blistering speech on the Senate floor Thursday, deriding President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address as a “State of Delusion” and outlining what he said would be Democrats’ central focus in 2026: lowering costs for American families.

Schumer noted that the president spoke at extraordinary length but offered little substance, calling him out for painting a rosy picture of the country utterly detached from the financial realities facing American households. While Trump claimed costs are falling and manufacturing is rebounding, Schumer countered that grocery staples such as ground beef and coffee are up sharply, rent continues to climb, and tariffs are costing the average family an estimated $1,700 more this year—that we likely won’t be getting refunds for.

“That is a heck of a lot of money when people are struggling to pay the bills,” Schumer said, point out that the president offered no credible plan to address affordability.

Schumer: ‘When Democrats Have The Majority, We Can Deliver Real Relief And Bring Down The Cost Of Living’

On manufacturing, Schumer said the administration’s rhetoric does not match the data. He claimed the country has lost manufacturing jobs month after month, totaling roughly 100,000 over the past year, despite Trump’s repeated assertions of growth in the sector.

Schumer also targeted healthcare, disputing the president’s pledge to protect Medicare. Citing analysis from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), he argued that Trump’s signature legislation—which Schumer and many Democrats aptly name the “big, ugly bill”—would accelerate the insolvency of the Medicare trust fund by more than a decade. He noted that Republicans supported the measure unanimously in the Senate, while Democrats opposed it.

The minority leader criticized Trump for largely sidestepping China during the address, calling it remarkable that a president would avoid discussing America’s chief global competitor in a State of the Union speech. He accused the administration of failing to secure meaningful concessions through tariffs and of mishandling strategic competition with Beijing.

Schumer framed affordability as the defining economic issue for voters and said Democrats will roll out a series of detailed policy proposals aimed at lowering costs. He pointed to previous efforts on housing and said upcoming initiatives would tackle food prices, energy and electricity, childcare, and healthcare, as well as structural issues such as consolidation in the food industry.

“Lowering costs will be Senate Democrats’ North Star in 2026,” Schumer stated, pledging sustained focus on kitchen-table economics and promising that, with a Democratic majority, lawmakers could deliver tangible relief for families squeezed by the rising cost of living under the current administration.
