White House National Security Communications advisor John Kirby commented on Taiwanese independence, declaring emphatically that the Biden Administration does not support the independence of the Nation of Taiwan.
This announcement comes just days after President Joe Biden reportedly had a phone conversation with President Xi of China. After that call, it was announced that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. AP has reported that Yellen is currently in China and will hold meetings with Chinese officials the next five days.
One reporter asked Kirby today in the daily White House Press Briefing “Xi reportedly told President Biden during your summit in San Francsco that Beijing plans to reunify Taiwan with mainland China. Did the Chinese leader bring up similar sentiments in the call the other day, and if so, what is President Biden’s response?”
White House National Security Communications advisor John Kirby answered from the White House podium today,
“Certainly Taiwan came up in the context of the call. There’s not a single discussion that we don’t have with senior leaders in the PRC where we don’t talk about Taiwan. Of course it came up. I won’t characterize President Xi’ s comments, but I can tell you that President Biden was very, very clear that nothing has changed about our One China Policy. We don’t support independence for Taiwan, but we also don’t want to see the status quo changed in a unilateral way, and certainly not by force.”

The Biden Administration has routinely stated that they do not support the independence of Taiwan. This position is extremely controversial with Chinese-American activists across the Nation, as Taiwan is often viewed as a resistance to the Communist Chinese Party.
