Two individuals have died in a massive home explosion that took place in Crescent Township, Pennsylvania today. The home, which authorities claim was occupied at the time of the explosion, was reduced to a pile of ash.

The explosion could reportedly be heard for miles, as the first reports of the event came in at 8:54am from Riverview Road in Alleghany County. It has been confirmed that a male, and a female perished in the blast.

A thick cloud of smoke could be seen billowing from the property when authorities arrived, as the rubble of the home was still on fire when assistance arrived. It was speculated that this explosion could have been caused by natural gas. Gas crews responded to the scene, but found that the home was hooked up to a private gas well, and not a public one. CBS reports on the gas crews’ response to the scene,

Columbia Gas crews were also on the scene; however, a spokesperson said the company did not serve the home involved. Instead, it said the home that exploded was served by a private gas well on the property.

Chief Tomer said both the gas well and a propane well have been secured.

“The private gas well was secured by a gas company rep that was in the area and then the propane tanks that are on site were also secured. Other than that, there’s no other utilities up in that area,” he said. “The power was secured to the initial explosion building.”

Columbia Gas said its crews stayed at the scene to help emergency officials. In its statement, the spokesperson said, “Our thoughts are with those impacted by the incident.”
