Legendary Electric Light Orchestra keyboardist Richard Tandy, who contributed immensely to the band’s tremendous success during the 1970s, has died at the age of 76.

Tandy joined the band in 1972. He played bass guitar with the group until Roy Wood departed, then taking up the keyboardist position in the band.

From 1972 to 1986, Electric Light Orchestra charted 27 songs on the Billboard Top 40. 15 of those songs would reach the Top 20. While the band had many songs crack the Top 20, including Mr. Blue Sky, Don’t Bring Me Down, and Evil Woman, it never had a song reach #1.

Considering their domination of the era, and the impressive lasting impact of their music, it seems unbelievable that the band never had a #1 charting song.

ELO founder Jeff Lynne made the announcement of Tandy’s passing on his X account yesterday, saying,

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy. He was a remarkable musician & friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together.

Electric Light Orchestra remains an extremely influential and popular rock band, still listened to daily millions upon millions of Americans. Their songs are mainstays on classic rock radio, and have been for decades now.

Possibly the most intriguing aspect of Electric Light Orchestra’s music is the depth, and yet simple nature of their songs.

The classic chorus and melody of each of their songs is encased in a timeless depth that not only separates their music from that of their competitors at the time, but has also made Electric Light Orchestra’s music effectively timeless.

Richard Tandy played a pivotal role in creating that universal, and unique sound. His contributions to music will be remembered forever.

Thank you for the great music, Richard Tandy. Rest in peace, legend!
