Iconic American rock guitarist Dickey Betts, who played in the legendary rock band the Allman Brothers, has reportedly passed away at the age of 80. Betts played guitar alongside Duane Allman, considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Betts died on April 18th in his Florida home surrounded by his loved ones.
The Allman Brothers had such hits as ‘Ramblin Man,’ ‘Melissa,’ Midnight Rider,’‘Blue Sky,’ and others. A historic and successful rock band, the Allman Brothers collected seven gold and four platinum albums.
The band’s success was tragically cut short in 1971 when lead guitarist Duane Allman was killed at just 24 years old. The Allman Brothers achieved a tremendous amount of success in a very short amount of time.
There’s no telling, if Duane Allman had survived, where the Allman Brothers would have ranked all-time as a rock band. Put it this way… They are still considered one of the best bands of all time, and they were truly only together for a few years.
The band was founded in 1969, and Allman died in 1971 in the midst of the band’s recording of the ‘Eat a Peach’ album.
Betts would take over as the lead guitarist for the band, leading them to tremendous success and acting as a truly fantastic lead.

The Allman Brothers Band guitarist and founding member Dickey Betts has died, Fox News Digital can confirm. The musician was 80 years old when he passed away on Thursday, April 18.
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Betts family announce the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard ‘Dickey’ Betts,” Betts’ manager David Spero said in a statement to Fox News Digital.“The legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader and family patriarch was at his home in Osprey, FL., surrounded by his family. Dickey was larger than life, and his loss will be felt world-wide. At this difficult time, the family asks for prayers and respect for their privacy in the coming days. More information will be forthcoming at the appropriate time,” he added.
