During today’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about the recent plummet in electric vehicle sales. Additionally, she addressed the news released today stating that Ford will be delaying the release of its electric SUV and whether this affects the Biden Administration’s electric vehicle policy.

The Press Secretary abruptly stated that it would not affect the Biden Administration’s policy decisions regarding EVs. Electric vehicles have become more affordable than ever, thanks to the Biden Administration, she stated. She also mentioned that electric vehicle sales have surpassed one million for the first time ever.

The reporter followed up on his question, asking if it is realistic to increase sales from about 7-8% to 50% in just eight years, especially when the auto makers themselves are reducing production.

Jean-Pierre responded by saying that the Biden Administration believes that manufacturing jobs in the United States have increased, and that the President’s policies are working for both the economy and the environment.

While the Biden Administration has clearly expressed its commitment to transitioning to all-electric vehicles, it remains uncertain whether manufacturers are prepared to take such a significant step without a reduction in the costs associated with producing electric cars.

Many people are concerned that transitioning to electric vehicles before all the necessary technologies are in place could potentially overwhelm the United States’ aging power grid.

While fossil fuel vehicles are reliable and can be much cheaper to own than an electric vehicle, some fear that owning a personal vehicle may not be as attainable as it once was due to increased production costs.

Just like any market, competition is key to improvement. Until electric cars can be manufactured and maintained at the same price point as combustion engines, there will be a strong argument for transitioning to all-electric vehicles. However, forcing manufacturers to cease production of combustion engine cars will inevitably make new car ownership unaffordable for many Americans.
