Two men have officially been convicted for the death of hip=hop legend Jam Master Jay at a New York City recording studio in 2002.

Ronald Washington, Jay’s childhood friend, and Karl Jordan Jr., Jay’s godson, were charged with murder while engaged in narcotics trafficking and firearm-related murder. The convictions, which come nearly 22 years since the death of Jam Master Jay, are shocking to say the least.

Jay Bryant, another defendant in this case, was charged with murder while engaged in narcotics trafficking and firearm-related murder. He plead not guilty, and is set to go on trial in 2026.

Assistant US Attorney Artie McConnell said about the case,

“It’s about greed. It’s about money. It’s about jealousy,” said in the prosecution’s closing arguments. And it’s about the actions of two men, Karl Jordan, Jr., and Ronald Washington, that the evidence proves are killers.”

Susan Kellman, Ronald Washington’s attorney, appeared to throw co-defendant Jay Bryant under the bus after this ruling, stating, “This is an attempt to make a mockery of the judicial system. They know who killed Jam Master Jay. They know it was Jay Bryant. They have no case against anybody except Jay Bryant.”

Jam Master Jay is possibly one of the most influential artists in the history of the Hip-Hop genre, being the DJ of the influential group Run-DMC. The band sold over 6.5 million albums in their career, and are credited with being the most successful early Hip-Hop group.

Many of their songs, including ‘It’s Tricky,’ and ‘Walk This Way,’ which featured rockband Aerosmith, can still be heard today.

22 years after his death, we finally have an answer as to how Jam Master Jay, the Hip-Hop icon, was killed. This will undoubtedly lead to many questioning whether the death of iconic rapper Biggie Smalls, who was killed in a tragic driveby shooting, will ever be solved as well.
